Promoter Trio Takes Over Musical Theater Basel

Three established live entertainment executives are joining forces to take over the operation of Musical Theater Basel in Switzerland from January 2027, with plans to expand its programming and attract major international touring productions.

Thomas Dürr, founder and CEO of Basel-based promoter act entertainment, will lead the new operating company, act theater management ag, alongside Dieter Semmelmann of German concert promoter Semmel Concerts and Ralf Kokemüller of Limelight Live Entertainment.

The partnership brings together three executives with extensive experience in concert promotion, touring productions and venue operations across German-speaking Europe.

New ownership and investment

The Canton of Basel-Stadt confirmed on 21 October that act theater management ag had been selected to take over the venue following a two-stage selection process.

Under the agreement, the company will acquire the theatre building for CHF 1.55 million, while the canton retains ownership of the land through a long-term ground lease. The annual ground rent will eventually reach approximately CHF 280,000, with payments phased in over eight years.

The takeover follows a decision by Basel`s parliament in June 2025 to preserve the theatre as a cultural venue and allocate CHF 15 million towards renovation work.

The building had previously faced an uncertain future after proposals emerged to replace it with a public swimming pool.

Broader programming strategy

The new operators intend to establish Musical Theater Basel as a year-round entertainment venue, combining major musical productions with concerts, comedy, festivals, exhibitions and corporate events.

The strategy, presented under the concept Ein Haus für Basel (A House for Basel), aims to increase the venue`s utilisation and attract a wider range of audiences.

With a capacity of more than 1,500 seats, Musical Theater Basel is among Switzerland`s larger purpose-built theatre venues.

According to Swiss media reports, the initial programme for 2027 includes Jethro Tull, The Phantom of the Opera, the Chinese National Circus and several tribute productions.

Dürr has also indicated that improvements to the building`s heating and ventilation systems will be required, alongside potential upgrades to its exterior and audience facilities.

International touring opportunities

The involvement of Semmel Concerts and Limelight Live Entertainment is expected to strengthen the venue`s access to international touring productions, particularly within the German-speaking market.

Semmel Concerts is one of Germany`s largest concert and live entertainment promoters, with activities spanning international tours, musicals, family entertainment and exhibitions.

Dürr`s act entertainment has an established presence in Switzerland`s concert and entertainment market, while Kokemüller brings experience in the development and promotion of large-scale live productions.

Musical Theater Basel originally opened in 1995 with The Phantom of the Opera and has since hosted international musicals, concerts and other entertainment productions.

The new operating company is scheduled to assume responsibility for the venue on 1 January 2027, marking a new phase for the theatre following several years of uncertainty over its future.
