Germany Honours Clubs and Promoters at Applaus Ceremony
Germany’s small and mid-sized live music sector received a significant boost on 17 November as 88 venues and event series were honoured at this year’s Applaus Awards, held at Munich’s Muffathalle.
The annual programme, administered by Initiative Musik since 2013, distributed roughly €1.7 million in funding to clubs and promoters across the country.
The ceremony, preceded by networking at neighbouring venue Ampere, drew senior political representatives and industry figures.
Initiative Musik managing director Katja Lucker highlighted a record 477 submissions this year, noting the crucial role clubs play in developing emerging talent. “Everyone started small,” she said, emphasising the need for sustainable support structures.
Minister of State for Culture and Media Wolfram Weimer used his address to frame the award as a recognition of entrepreneurship in the cultural sector. “This evening is about distributing money, but above all, it’s about appreciation,” he said. “Clubs provide a profound service to society.”
The awards, selected by an 18-member expert jury, highlighted excellence across multiple categories.
VillaWuller (Trier) was recognised as Best Small Venue, Berlin’s SO36 received the Inclusion Award, and Dresden’s Objekt Klein a was named Best Live Music Venue. Additional prizes went to Mahagoni Kollektiv (Awareness), KFZ Marburg (Sustainability), and Dortmund’s Domizil, which won Best Live Music Programme.
Live performances from Vandalisbin, Enji and Cologne’s Grenzkontrolle rounded out the two-hour ceremony before industry networking continued late into the evening at Ampere.
