SXSW to downsize in 2026, shortening festival schedule

South by Southwest (SXSW) will see major changes in 2026, as festival organizers announced plans to shorten its duration and adjust its format. The annual event, known for its mix of conferences, music, film, and interactive experiences, will end two days earlier than usual, running from March 12-18 instead of continuing into the weekend. The final weekend, which traditionally featured music showcases, will be eliminated. Organisers cited affordability and accessibility as key reasons for the changes, stating that they are lowering 2026 presale badge prices to ensure a broader audience can attend. They also plan to streamline access to improve the overall experience. The festival’s adjustments come as Austin prepares to demolish and redevelop the Austin Convention Center, which has served as SXSW’s main venue for decades. The center will close in April 2025 and is expected to reopen in time for the 2029 festival. SXSW officials said they are taking the opportunity to create industry-specific hubs and new ways for attendees to connect. SXSW has been a major cultural and economic event in Austin since its inception in 1987. In 2024, it attracted more than 228,000 participants, with thousands attending in person and others engaging virtually. The festival also brought in over $377 million in revenue, slightly down from the previous year. City officials are monitoring how the shorter duration might impact Austin’s economy, which benefits from SXSW’s sales tax and hotel occupancy tax revenue. While there are no specific projections yet, they noted that SXSW’s economic influence extends beyond the festival dates, as visitors contribute to local businesses through extended stays and spending.
