Melbourne independent live music venue The Beast has confirmed it will permanently close after 18 years of operation in Brunswick East, marking the end of a long-running grassroots stage in the city’s inner north.
Also known as The B.East, the venue hosted live bands and comedy alongside its bar and kitchen offer, and built a reputation as a platform for local and touring acts within Melbourne’s independent circuit.
In a statement shared on 17 February, the operators cited the ongoing financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and Victoria’s extended lockdown period as the primary reason behind the decision.
“We fought hard, but the long aftershock of the lockdown years was something we couldn’t outrun,” the venue said in its closing message.
Owned by Melbourne hospitality operator Maz Salt, The Beast operated during a period of significant pressure on Australia’s live and hospitality sectors. Over nearly two decades, it contributed to Brunswick East’s reputation as a live music hub and provided a stage for emerging artists in an intimate club setting.
The operators thanked musicians, staff and audiences who had supported the venue since its launch in 2008. No final trading date has been announced.
The closure adds to the ongoing challenges facing independent music venues in Melbourne and across Australia as operators continue to navigate rising costs and post-pandemic recovery.
