The VIP Team joined the inaugural European Festival Summit (EFS), co-hosted by the European Festival Association YOUROPE and Karlsruhe Marketing und Event GmbH (KME), brought together 200 participants at Tollhaus in Karlsruhe this week.
The event was hailed as a significant milestone for the European festival community, offering a platform for collaboration, innovation, and forward-thinking discussions on how to make festivals future-ready.
The program addressed a wide range of topics critical to the festival industry, including sustainability, the role of AI, Generation Z marketing, and event safety.
Delegates included festival organizers, ticketing and digital service providers, cultural researchers, and even representatives from fields such as cybersecurity and futurology.
Participants hailed from more than 20 countries, including the USA and South Africa, with ages ranging from 22 to 79, reflecting the summit`s broad appeal and relevance.
Christof Huber, Chairman of YOUROPE, celebrated the summit as “a big success,” noting how remarkable it was for a first-time conference to attract 200 participants. “We have shown that smaller conferences that are well-designed ensure a more open exchange among participants,” he said, emphasizing the importance of collaboration.
Key panels featured discussions on the challenges facing festivals today, such as rising production costs, extreme weather events, and changes in audience behavior, particularly among Generation Z.
During the panel “Quo Vadis, Festivals?”, leading organizers including Cindy Castillo (Mad Cool Festival, Spain) and Arnaud Meersseman (AEG Presents France) highlighted issues like declining availability of headline acts and increasing marketing costs.
Gen Z marketing expert Julius Lutz (Promoplug, Germany) offered potential solutions in his session “Staying Relevant,” emphasizing the need for authentic, bold content and platforms like TikTok to engage younger audiences.
Other panels explored how festivals can integrate AI, address security risks like ransomware and bomb threats, and adapt to extreme weather conditions. Sustainability remained a key focus, with sessions highlighting eco-friendly practices, such as circular construction methods and Roskilde Festival`s initiatives to inspire a more positive future.
A memorable dinner event at the Hoepfner brewery featured a surprise performance by Ukrainian musician Maksym Chmyr, who streamed live from Lviv. His rendition of “Lean on Me” moved many attendees.
YOUROPE`s General Secretary Holger Jan Schmidt used the moment to draw attention to the ongoing war in Ukraine, urging delegates to continue supporting the country through their events.
The EFS also marked the conclusion of YOUROPE’s three-year EU-funded “Future-Fit Festivals” project, which began in 2022 and wraps up in December 2024. YOUROPE announced that it has secured an additional four years of EU funding to further support the festival industry.
