Dutch grassroots venue declared bankrupt

Dutch grassroots music venue Slachthuis in Haarlem has been declared bankrupt following a period of financial difficulties, putting the future of the live music operation in doubt.

Stichting Slachthuis, the organisation behind the Slachthuis music venue in Haarlem, Netherlands, has been declared bankrupt after efforts to secure a sustainable financial future for the operation failed.

The venue said it had spent recent months working on a recovery plan, but that the process had not resulted in a viable solution. Its supervisory board subsequently filed for bankruptcy.

Slachthuis had been struggling financially for some time. Local reports put the organisation`s debts at around €780,000, including a substantial amount of unpaid rent owed to the municipality of Haarlem.

The municipality had been providing Slachthuis with an annual subsidy of €250,000 and had previously committed funding through 2030. However, it declined to provide additional financial support after determining that the proposed recovery plan did not offer sufficient prospects for a structurally sustainable operation.

The financial problems had already affected the live programme. Earlier this year, Slachthuis announced that it would stop organising most of its own concerts, citing disappointing ticket sales and rising operating costs. A number of shows were subsequently cancelled or transferred to other venues.

Slachthuis opened in its current form in 2022 as a grassroots music centre in Haarlem`s former municipal slaughterhouse complex, which dates back to 1907. The project was developed with Haarlem venue Patronaat and arts organisation Hart as part of a €4.3 million municipal redevelopment of the site.

The operation combined a live music venue, café, rehearsal rooms, recording facilities and music education. Its performance and café area had a maximum permitted capacity of around 150 people, positioning Slachthuis primarily as a small grassroots and emerging-artist venue serving Haarlem`s local music scene.

Following the bankruptcy, the curator initially allowed Slachthuis to remain open in a significantly reduced form while the future of the operation was assessed.

The venue and bar are currently closed. Patronaat and Hart have since stepped in to operate the site`s rehearsal and educational facilities on a temporary basis for at least six months. The arrangement does not represent a restart of Stichting Slachthuis, and discussions over the longer-term future of the venue continue.
