The Grade II*-listed venue, located in Brighton`s Middle Street, has remained vacant since 2006. Under the agreement, AMG will reopen the building as a live performance venue following the completion of ongoing restoration and redevelopment works.

The Hippodrome was acquired in 2020 by Brighton-based property company Matsim Properties, which has undertaken extensive structural restoration, including the installation of a new roof to protect the venue`s circular auditorium and decorative ceiling. The building is regarded as one of the UK`s most architecturally significant circus theatres.

Live Nation and AMG are investing £9.5 million in the project as part of a wider £25 million redevelopment programme aimed at restoring and modernising the venue. The investment will support infrastructure improvements and facility upgrades while preserving the building`s historic features.

The interior redevelopment is being led by Live Nation`s Blueprint Studio, working alongside architectural practice Burrell Foley Fischer, venue design consultancy Charcoalblue, and Matsim Properties.

Simon Lambor of Matsim said the company was pleased to appoint AMG as operator of the venue and highlighted the extensive restoration work completed since acquiring the building. He noted that the project had involved addressing significant damage caused by dry rot and water penetration and described the agreement as the beginning of a new chapter for the venue.

Steve Hoyland, Chief Operating Officer of AMG, said the company was honoured to bring live performances back to the Brighton landmark. He described Brighton as a city with a strong creative and cultural identity and said investment in live entertainment venues remains important for the future of the industry.

Originally opened in 1901, the Brighton Hippodrome was converted from a skating rink by renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham. Over the years it became a prominent variety theatre, hosting performers including Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Sammy Davis Jr..
