Denmark’s live music sector recorded 7.9 million concert visitors in 2024, a 2% increase compared with the previous year, according to new figures from Statistics Denmark.
A total of 34,200 concerts were held—broadly unchanged from 2023—across venues ranging from churches and cultural centres to clubs, festivals and multifunctional arenas.
The annual statistics capture all publicly accessible concert events where performers receive remuneration through rights payments, covering everything from solo performances to large-scale productions.
Majority of Concerts Remain Small-Scale
On average, around 100 concerts took place every day across the country in 2024. Smaller events continued to dominate the landscape:
* 75% of all concerts hosted fewer than 200 attendees
* 85% had under 500 attendees
* Only 7% drew 5,000 visitors or more, although this small share accounted for roughly one-third of total attendance
Cultural Centres and Regional Venues Drive Growth
Most types of concert organisers saw audience growth. Cultural centres recorded the strongest increase, rising from 480,000 visitors in 2023 to 630,000 in 2024 (+31%). Regional venues followed, growing 16% year-on-year to 640,000 visitors. Both organiser types also staged more concerts than in 2023.
Other categories showing notable growth included:
* Music associations (+13%)
* Non-regional venues (+9%)
* Music festivals (+6%)
Only the Folkekirken (Church of Denmark) and the mixed “other organisers” category experienced a decline in attendance.
Women Attend Concerts More Frequently Than Men
Kulturvaneundersøgelsen, a survey of cultural habits, shows that 62% of Danes aged 15+ attended at least one concert or music festival in 2024. Women were slightly more active concertgoers (64%) than men (61%).
The gender gap was most pronounced among younger audiences:
* 16–24-year-olds: 79% of women vs. 70% of men
* 25–34-year-olds: 72% of women vs. 64% of men
Men only outnumbered women in the 45–54 age group (71% vs. 67%).
Price, Interest and Lifestyle Are Key Barriers
Among respondents who did not attend a concert in 2024, the most common reasons were lifestyle, lack of interest and ticket prices. Men were more likely to cite lack of interest (38% vs. 23% of women) or preferring to stay at home (33% vs. 27%). For women, price was the most significant barrier (33% vs. 28% of men).
Women were also more likely to mention social or practical barriers, including not having someone to go with and difficulties getting to the venue.
