Live music venue Fermaten in Herning is set to undergo a major renovation and expansion, with work expected to begin in January 2026.

The project will involve the demolition of the historic building at Smallegade 4, which has been deemed preservation-worthy.

According to Fermaten’s manager and booker, Nicki Quist, the current facilities no longer meet the needs of the venue’s operations, particularly for its volunteers.

The new plans include upgraded spaces designed to improve logistics and create a better environment for those working at the venue.

Herning Municipality’s Planning and Housing Committee approved the demolition at a meeting earlier this week. Smallegade 4, built in the early 1900s as part of a knitwear factory by Niels Krøjgaard, was assessed at a “medium-high” value on the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces’ scale. While recognised as an industrial heritage site, it was not listed, allowing for redevelopment.

The project will also prioritise reusing as much material from the demolished facade as possible, a requirement linked to funding from the Realdania foundation.

Fermaten’s new facilities will be open to various cultural activities, and the venue plans to maintain its role as a key hub for both local and international touring acts in Herning.
