Music Venue Properties (MVP), the Charitable Community Benefit Society established by Music Venue Trust, has announced a second £500,000 loan agreement with Figurative, a not-for-profit organisation focused on impact investment in the cultural and creative sectors.
The funding will support the ongoing expansion of MVP’s “Own Our Venues” campaign, which launched its second phase last month.
This initiative aims to purchase and protect the freeholds of seven grassroots music venues (GMVs) across the UK: The Joiners (Southampton), Bedford Esquires, The Croft (Bristol), The Sugarmill (Stoke), Peggy’s Skylight (Nottingham), The Pipeline (Brighton), and The Lubber Fiend (Newcastle).
To date, the campaign has raised over £210,000 through a mix of community shares, music industry contributions, and matched funding, with participation from more than 370 individual investors. Funds raised help unlock additional support and highlight the role of collective investment in securing long-term venue sustainability.
This marks the second loan Figurative has provided to MVP. In 2022, the organization supplied a similar £500,000 facility from its Arts & Culture Impact Fund, enabling the purchase of five GMV freeholds during the campaign’s first phase. The current tranche of funding is now listed on the campaign’s Crowdfunder page, which tracks fundraising progress and targets.
The Own Our Venues initiative is designed to remove small, independent venues from precarious commercial leases by moving them into community ownership. Through a new “cultural lease” model, the program offers long-term stability with fair rent terms, annual maintenance contributions, and ongoing operational support, helping venues stay focused on cultural and community programming.
Rachel Green, Chief Investment Officer at Figurative, said: “We’re pleased to back MVP once again through this second impact investment loan. Their innovative, community-focused approach offers a clear model for protecting live music spaces and aligns with our mission to support sustainable ventures in the cultural sector.”
Matthew Otridge, Chief Operating Officer of MVP, added: “Figurative’s continued support is vital to the growth of Own Our Venues. As with our first campaign, which raised nearly £3 million, this loan helps us go further—but it’s the collective power of community investment that truly drives this effort forward.”
The Own Our Venues project continues to advocate for community-powered solutions to protect essential cultural infrastructure in the UK’s live music ecosystem.
