More than 400 leading UK artists and creative industry figures—including Sir Elton John, Dua Lipa, and Sir Paul McCartney—have signed an open letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, calling for stronger regulation of artificial intelligence in creative sectors.

The letter, coordinated by the Creative Rights in AI Coalition, demands the government mandate transparency in AI training and establish a licensing system to protect copyrighted works from unauthorized use by AI developers.

“We will lose an immense growth opportunity if we give our work away at the behest of a handful of powerful overseas tech companies,” the letter warns, emphasizing the threat to UK cultural industries, future income, and national values.

Other signatories include Coldplay, Dame Shirley Bassey, authors Kazuo Ishiguro and Tom Stoppard, and film and TV figures Ian McKellen and Russell T. Davies.

The coalition represents a broad alliance of creative stakeholders, including the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), PRS for Music, PPL, the British Copyright Council, and major news groups like Guardian News & Media and the Telegraph Media Group.

The appeal came ahead of a House of Lords vote on the UK’s Data (Use and Access) Bill. Originally designed to loosen copyright restrictions for AI developers, the bill was scaled back after backlash from the creative sector. A controversial "opt-out" clause that would have allowed AI firms to scrape copyrighted content without prior consent was dropped.

The government now plans to assess the broader impact of such measures on creative industries before proceeding.
