German city Düsseldorf is making a major investment in its live entertainment and sports infrastructure, with over €120 million earmarked for the modernisation and future-proofing of D.Live-operated venues by 2029.

The investment will enhance customer experience, hospitality, infrastructure, and energy management across all locations.

A key focus is the Merkur Spiel-Arena, which will undergo a €60 million transformation to meet modern stadium standards.
A standout project includes installing Germany’s third-largest stadium photovoltaic system—spanning over 7,000 square meters—to improve energy efficiency. Additionally, the Merkur Business Club will be fully rebuilt, covering 2,200 square meters, alongside new 360-degree LED perimeter technology, revamped catering facilities, and a flexible wayfinding system.

The recently redesigned event spaces, Caves and The Tunnel, were already recognized with the German Design Award 2025 for interior architecture.

The Open Air Park Düsseldorf will introduce a first-of-its-kind, permanent plug & play urban festival ground with a capacity of 80,000. Set to debut on July 8 with an AC/DC concert, the venue will feature built-in electricity, water, and sewage infrastructure—an €11 million investment aimed at revolutionizing Germany’s open-air event landscape.

Meanwhile, the historic Rheinterrasse is slated for a €12 million modernization, including structural improvements, cutting-edge event technology, and a new brand identity to enhance its appeal as a premier venue.

Other D.Live venues—including the PSD Bank Dome, Mitsubishi Electric Hall, and Castello Düsseldorf—will also receive upgrades to enhance technology, visitor experience, and sustainability.

D.Live CEO Michael Brill emphasised Düsseldorf’s commitment to maintaining its status as a top-tier event destination. "No other location in Germany develops existing venues – whether clubs, arenas, stadiums or open-air areas – so consistently in order to be able to permanently attract top events in the international live entertainment and sports market. This will enable us to meet the changing demands on the visitor experience and production conditions and ensure that Düsseldorf remains a leading location for top-class sports, music, and cultural events in Europe."
