Donald Trump has announced plans to overhaul the board of trustees at the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, appointing himself as chairman.

This move has raised concerns over political influence on the institution’s operations.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump declared, “We are going to make the Kennedy Centre GREAT AGAIN,” announcing mass dismissals and his self-appointment.

The Kennedy Centre responded that while board replacements are permitted, such direct intervention is unprecedented. The institution stressed its history of bipartisan support and governance rules established by Congress.

In protest, actress and writer Issa Rae cancelled a sold-out event at the centre. “I believe this infringes on the values of an institution that celebrates artists of all backgrounds,” she stated.

Other notable resignations include singer-songwriter Ben Folds, opera singer Renée Fleming, and television producer Shonda Rhimes. They cited concerns over artistic independence following Trump’s changes.

Meanwhile, Trump appointed country musician Lee Greenwood, best known for God Bless the U.S.A., to the new board.
