Germany’s federal music funding body, Initiative Musik, has announced €4 million in funding to support 127 festivals across the country amid economic challenges.

The initiative aims to strengthen cultural diversity, particularly in regional areas, with 75% of the recipients located in non-urban regions.

The selection process considered factors such as sustainability, accessibility, and diversity.

Among the funded events are Medieval Open Air in Thuringia, which blends music, history, and political education; Berlin Atonal, recognized for its avant-garde and interdisciplinary artistic contributions; BallerBunt Festival in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which focuses on young talent development; and Krawall Summer Festival in Lower Saxony, which promotes diversity, participation, and safe spaces for underrepresented voices.

Out of 575 applicants, 127 festivals were selected for funding.

Small and medium-sized festivals represented a significant portion of the demand, with over 94% of applications coming from events with up to 15,000 attendees.

Each selected festival received up to €50,000, with approximately €380,000 allocated to administrative costs.
