LIVE, the leading voice for 15 UK live music organisations, announced a groundbreaking sustainability initiative led by its expert working group, LIVE Green.
This landmark effort will introduce a contractual clause template for artists` booking contracts, designed to galvanise industry-wide action and transform the environmental impact of live events.
LIVE Green is led by Carol Scott (pictured), the Principal Sustainability Advocate at TAIT, a world-class live experience company, and Ross Patel, LIVE Green`s Impact Consultant. It is a cross-sector group that coordinates sustainability activities, drawing on representatives from venues, festivals, touring, artists, agents, managers, promoters, production, and more. The group aims to facilitate cooperation across the organisation’s membership, providing access to top-tier sustainability guidance while ensuring knowledge-sharing and support to help drive sector-wide efforts in this area.
"Today marks a significant step forward for the live music industry," says Carol Scott. "LIVE Green`s template for Green Sustainability Clauses represents a true collaborative effort across the entire ecosystem of live events," adds Ross Patel.
The introduction of these clauses follows the successful implementation of contractual health and safety policies and practices. The goal is to foster widespread, lasting cultural change within the industry by accelerating the conversation around sustainability between all parties involved in artist performance bookings. By integrating sustainability into contracts between artists` agents, promoters, and venues, LIVE Green is poised to drive the adoption of greener working practices across the board.
The newly launched clauses focus on key action areas including waste, energy, water, food, merchandise, and audience travel, with the aim of making live music more sustainable. They incorporate contributions from a cross-industry stakeholder group, which included promoters, agents, artists, managers, venues, festivals, sustainability consultants, production companies, and more.
The world`s largest talent agencies have indicated that they will propose the adoption of green clauses (using the template to draft their own) to their clients as an opt-in option. Independent agencies such as ATC Live and Pure Represents Ltd have also signaled their commitment, demonstrating a desire for a more eco-conscious industry.
Olivia-Jane Ransley, Director of Operations at ATC Live, says, "ATC Live is proud and excited to be a part of this long-needed initiative. We hope that including this clause in contracts will not only raise awareness but also drive impactful change within the industry."
Reflecting the strong support from the talent agents` community, Paul Winteridge, President of The Entertainment Agents’ Association, said, “As one of the original member associations to initiate discussions on the introduction of a Green Clause, The Entertainment Agents’ Association members will be early adopters of the suggested wording. Each member agent will adapt the clause to suit the wide range of live entertainment performances wherever possible, from live music to theatre shows. We are grateful for LIVE’s collaborative approach to green issues, and we are proud that the music and entertainment industry is actively working toward reducing carbon footprints and emissions.”
To ensure a fully aligned approach to the initiative, major promoters, including SJM and Kilimanjaro, among others, have also confirmed that they will encourage the inclusion of these clauses and support the industry`s efforts to address climate action. Zac Fox, COO of Kilimanjaro Group, says, “At Kilimanjaro Live, we are delighted to be part of such a positive leap forward in tackling the environmental impact of live music. Thanks to the collaborative setup of LIVE, this has been achieved, as it will take all elements of this industry working together to make a change.”
Ross Patel reinforced the industry`s collective responsibility, stating, "There is a moral obligation to do the right thing for our communities and to use our cultural platforms to help ensure a fair and just future. By sharing this piece of work and emphasising the cross-industry collaboration that has been crucial to getting us to this point, we hope the wider industry, artists, and audiences feel inspired and empowered to accelerate positive change within their spheres of influence."
Carol Scott echoed this sentiment, adding, "This is an industry initiative written by the industry, for the industry. As with everything LIVE produces, this work is intended to benefit all and will be free to access via www.livemusic.biz. We hope the clause template will be adapted as necessary and adopted far and wide, stimulating awareness and conversation."
