This weekend, thousands of music enthusiasts gathered in Gothenburg`s Slottsskogen for the annual Way Out West festival.
Since its inception in 2007, the Swedish estival has grown into one of Sweden`s most anticipated music events, attracting top international acts.
This year, the lineup featured big names like Fred Again.., Jack White, André3000, and Norwegian artist Susanne Sundfør, drawing in crowds from all over.
However, the festival experience was notably different this year due to a new policy that left many attendees taken aback.
In response to the heightened terror threat level in Sweden, the Swedish police authority introduced a ban on bags at large events, which took effect at the end of last year. This new regulation was implemented at Way Out West, meaning that festival-goers were prohibited from bringing any bags, regardless of size, into the event.
The bag ban sparked mixed reactions among festival attendees. While some understood the safety precautions, others found it inconvenient and disruptive. The policy underscores the ongoing challenges of balancing public safety with the logistics of large-scale events.
A note on the organisers website stated:
The festival area in Slottsskogen will be subject to the Swedish Police Authority’s decision of a total bag ban. This means that no bags are allowed to be brought into the public festival area. The ban also applies to handbags, tote bags and transparent bags. Wallets and small toiletry bags that fit in your pocket are not covered by the ban.

– The size regulations for wallets and toiletry bags will be 10x15x5 cm. If you have a wallet with a strap within these measurements, please remove the strap when entering the site.
– Tote bags will be available for purchase right after you enter the festival area, in the info tent, in the merch tent and by sellers on foot around the site. These will be be sold at cost price and be cheap. You may NOT bring an empty tote bag.
– Sanitary products (including tampons and sanitary pads) will be available free of charge within the festival area.
– Exceptions are made for people who, for medical reasons, need to bring a bag. If you need medications, equipment or similar you may bring a bag. However, it is important that only one bag is brought, and that it is appropriately sized for the medical products you need. Please be ready to provide relevant documentation when entering the festival site.
