The 2024 Workforce Diversity Survey by UK Music highlights notable advancements in gender and ethnic diversity within the music industry.

The survey, which garnered responses from 2,874 industry professionals, provides a snapshot of those working behind the scenes.

Key findings include a rise in the representation of women in senior roles from 40.4% in 2020 to 48.3%. Overall, 53.8% of survey participants identified as women.

Additionally, the number of Black, Asian, and ethnically diverse respondents aged 16 to 24 saw a significant increase, jumping from 23.2% in 2022 to 40.6%.

"We have seen steady progress in increasing diversity across the music industry since launching this survey in 2016, with further significant improvements each year," said Ammo Talwar (pictured) MBE, chair of the UK Music diversity taskforce. He credited the progress to impactful initiatives and the leadership of organizations committed to change.

However, Talwar noted that there is still much work to be done and urged the next government to collaborate fearlessly with UK Music to eliminate remaining barriers. He highlighted concerns about socio-economic diversity, noting that the proportion of industry workers from professional backgrounds exceeds the national average. Talwar emphasized the need for more inclusive talent recruitment from all backgrounds.

The report concluded with a call to support the diversity measures outlined in UK Music’s Manifesto for Music.

It urged the next UK government to develop a comprehensive growth strategy, extend the limitation period for discrimination or harassment claims under the Equality Act 2010 from three months to six months, mandate reporting of ethnicity and disability pay gap data, and commission an independent review of police and local authority responses to Black music events.
