The dispute centers on Corcoran’s claim for unpaid commissions under a three-year sunset clause in their unwritten management deal. Chance, real name Chancellor Bennett, argued that Illinois law invalidated Corcoran’s commission claims because their agreement was not in writing. However, the judge ruled that Corcoran had fulfilled his obligations under their oral contract, making the claim legally viable. Corcoran initially sued in 2020 after being fired, alleging that Bennett ignored his advice, leading to a poorly received album and tour cancellation. He claims he is owed commissions on income streams he helped establish. Bennett countersued, arguing Corcoran had already been paid and had used the rapper’s success for personal business gains. With the legal technicality rejected, the case will now proceed to trial, where Chance’s legal team insists Corcoran’s claim is "meritless."
