Entertainment
JOHN INMAN was just thirteen when he first appeared at the South Pier in Blackpool, his home town. Since then he has never looked back, with innumerable appearances on television, in cabaret and stage productions all over Britain and overseas and with starring roles in London's West End.
His West End debut came in the musical Ann Veronica at the Cambridge Theatre, followed by seventeen months at the famous Windmill Theatre after which John starred as Lord Fancourt Babberley in the production of Charley's Aunt at the Adelphi Theatre in the Strand.
However it was as Mr. Humphries in the long running B.B.C. series Are You Being Served? that he became a household name throughout the country-and in dozens of countries including Australia and New Zealand, where he has starred in an Australian version of Are You Being Served? There has also been a stage version and a feature film in which John re-created his role. He was chosen to be the subject of This Is Your Life and was later honoured by the Variety Club of Great Britain as B.B.C. television personality of the year, also voted funniest man on television by the readers of T.V. Times.
Apart from Are You Being Served?, John has made numerous appearances on television both in Britain and many other countries. In pantomime, John played one of the 'Ugly Sisters' in Cinderella at major venues throughout Britain and he created the role of Mother Goose at Wimbledon Theatre, breaking box office records and continuing for many years he starred in successful Christmas seasons with Mother Goose at leading theatres in England. He is now established as one of the best pantomime 'Dames' in show business.
Summer seasons have also been an important element in John's varied carreer-he has starred in his own show Fancy Free at a number of venues. He has had great success with the farce Pyjama Tops, touring the theatres all over Britain and Australia in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and around the Gold Coast. He also starred in My Fat Friend which played Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Cairo, Kuala Lumpur and many countries throughout the Middle and Far East.
