Pete Whyman Trio
Jazz
The trio made its spectacular debut at the 1992 'Outside In' Festival prompting the Independent reviewer to say that they were the best new band there.
The musical territory in which the trio operates is arguably more European than American, its roots more embedded in chamber music than in jazz. If the attention to fine nuance and balance most often associated with classical music is a hallmark of its playing, then so is the improvisatory flair, most commonly associated with jazz.
What is most attractive and rewarding thing about the trio is the way it makes redundant the easy clichés embedded in our minds concerning musical categories. It expands the listeners' awareness and opens the mind to fresh perspectives.
"The level of technical certainty was awesome... a fine and under-exposed virtuoso" The Guardian
"Taking his cue from the experiments of the American reeds player Jimmy Giuffre... the trio was the best new band at the Festival" The Independent
