In the age of MTV, non-stop hit radio and massive promotional campaigns for almost every new album, Alimony from Göteborg has performed an unlikely feat: By the strength of their music alone, they have managed to penetrate the media static and make people sit up and listen. Long before their first album (Bottomless, released on Ramblin` Records, May 17, 1999) was even recorded, Alimony got full page articles in some of Swedens largest daily papers and most prestigeous music magazines. Aside from some excellent, but not widely circulated demos, Alimony have earned their reputation through their live performances. Seasoned music professionals, club owners and journalists have been knocked out by their talent and integrity. Alimony seems to have sprung from a series of fortunate coincidences, leaving the band members almost as pleasantly surprised as their audience. Singer/guitarist Fredrik Öster, keyboard player Bjarne Karlsson and lead guitarist Anders Lindström, had played together in the rock group Road Apples. One day, little more than a year ago, Fredrik presented the other two with a bunch of songs that had an unmistakeable Country flavour to them, reminiscent of Gram Parsons and early The Band. All three felt that this was a path they would very much like to pursue. To get the right sound for the new material, they set out to look for a steel guitarist. They found Gunnar Frick, a seasoned and original steel picker, who added a deeper finish to their sound.
When Alimony felt ready to try out their songs and their songs at a small club, they got hold of a temporary drummer and recruited bass player Tommy Moodigan when he walked into the Gothenburg book store where Fredrik works. The first gig gave them an instant cult following, impressive press coverage and a management deal. Their later performances have earned them a reputation as one of the best Alternative Country bands and over-all live bands in Scandinavia. In the recording of Alimony`s debut album for Ramblin`, we`ve tried our best to preserve the magic that the band creates on stage. We believe we`ve succeeded pretty well. Take a listen to the sound files, or get the whole album, and judge for yourself.
