Hailing from Spanish Town, one of Jamaica's toughest enclaves renowned for
producing some of the island's most talented personalities despite its draconian conditions, dancehall artiste Govana (formerly known as Deablo) had a
treacherous musical upstart. After hearing a mixtape of Aidonia in high school, the
St. George's College student was so impressed with his future mentor's lyricism that he decided at that moment to pursue a career as a recording artiste. Armed with a burning desire to become successful at the craft, the young deejay eventually got introduced to Aidonia through a mutual friend. However, he soon got a rude awakening about the music industry as he toiled arduously for years under the tutelage of his mentor without gaining much recognition. Releasing two major projects during the infancy of his career, a mixtape titled ‘Grainz Out’, followed by 'Spain Town', a visual documentary showcasing snippets of life from his perspective within the enclaves of St. Catherine, Govana steadily continued to make strategic moves aimed at bolstering his presence within the local and international space.

Though not attaining much ascendancy with his early recordings, Govana finally
tasted success in 2012 with his collaborative effort 'Run Road'. The chart-topping single featuring Aidonia made dancehall fans start to take note of the burgeoning star. A few years after his official induction into the Aidonia-led Jag One Production (JOP) camp, Govana, whose given name is Romeo Nelson, began fostering the idea of a rebranding exercise via a name change. That idea became a reality four years later, in 2016, when he took the bold step of officially changing his stage name from ‘Deablo’ to 'Govana'. When quizzed about the new moniker, the artiste said it was something he had been contemplating for a long time and finally decided to take the leap of faith. He decided the change was necessary as he was no longer comfortable with the diabolical connotation attached to his previous moniker despite his hardcore musical persona. Coming on the heels of the name change was the release of the 2016 inspirational anthem ‘No Complaining’. This was quickly followed by 'Happy,' another noteworthy track that struck a chord with dancehall lovers. Fast-forward to
Summer 2017, Govana released what would become his official breakout single titled 'Gyal Clown', for which he also won the 'Breakthrough Artiste of the Year' at the 2018 installment of the Your View Awards (YVAs), formerly known as Youth View Awards. This was followed by other noteworthy tracks such as 'Gyal Thief' and 'Dozen +10'. However, it was the catchy party anthem 'Breeze' featuring Aidonia that cemented his place as a Dancehall A-lister.

Officially transcending into the top tier of dancehall practitioners, Govana continues to travel the expanse of the globe, performing at a plethora of major festivals and concerts, spreading his brand of music to a rapidly growing fanbase. In 2018, the 4th Genna hitmaker released a slew of hits, namely 'Rich Forever', 'Better Than That' with Jada Kingdom, 'One and Move', and the perpetual anthem 'Champ', all of which continue to saturate the airwaves and social scene. 2019 saw even further elevation of the brand as the 4th Genna lieutenant showed the dichotomy of his artistry, churning out more thought-provoking hits such as 'The Light', 'Titan', 'Loyalty', 'Unanswered', and 'Believe Me'. With the foreseeable goal of becoming a quintessential artiste for the genre, that mindset led Govana not only to continue honing his studio and stagecraft but to complete his debut anthology titled 'Humans And Monsters Are Not The Same’ (HAMANTS). Release on January 10th, Govana said the timing was right to unveil this body of work; however, he never wanted to brand the collective as an album, EP, or a Mixtape. Govana further disclosed that 'Humans And Monsters Are Not The Same' (HAMANTS) would contain contributions from several noted producers, namely Chimney Records, LMR Pro, Dream Team, Emudio Records, CJ The Chemist, Jamie Roberts (YVP), and Quantanium Records, among others, with select cameos from his peers.

Govana's career achievements are noteworthy. He achieved Gold certification in Spain for his collaboration with Bad Gyal on the song titled "Open The Door". He also launched his own musical outfit called Strikeforce, and features with his artists have all garnered over a million views. Teaming up with CJTheChemist, Govana ventured into music production and created the 2019 riddim compilation of the year, "1 Matik Riddim". He was named the 2020 Male Dancehall Artist of the Year and has performed at several sold-out shows across Europe, Canada, America, and the Caribbean, further solidifying his international appeal and influence in the dancehall genre.
