Born on February 23, 1976, in South Africa, Katia Guerreiro is still a child, on the island of S. Miguel, in the Azores. It is at the age of 15, playing the "Viola da Terra" - a traditional instrument of the Archipelago - at the Folkloric Ranch of Santa Cecília, which begins its musical journey. Lisbon is her next destination, where she attends the medical course, which ends in 2000. But she always maintains an intense connection to music during these academic years, as a vocalist for a 60s rock band. Her career as a fado singer begins in 2000, with his presence at the concert honoring Amália Rodrigues, at the Coliseum in Lisbon. Audience and critics surrender to their interpretation of Amor de Mel, Amor de Fel and Barco Negro, considering it the best performance of the night. The following year (2001), FADO MAIOR, his first CD, which arrives at Plata Disc, is nominated for the José Afonso Prize and pioneer in South Korea, where it enters the top of sales. IN THE HANDS OF FADO is her second CD, released on the market in December 2003. Katia selects for this work a rich and careful repertoire, privileging the poetry of the greatest names in Portuguese literature, among which are Luís de Camões, Florbela Espanca , Ary dos Santos and António Lobo Antunes. She is again nominated for the José Afonso Prize. Recognizing in Katia Guerreiro an inescapable value of Portuguese music, the Japanese television network NHK moves a team of journalists to Portugal, and produces a one-hour documentary on his life and career. Also the prestigious French cultural channel TV Mezzo produces, in 2004, a film that is entirely dedicated to him. Also in 2004, Katia offers France and Japan with ten performances in each of the countries. In the commemorations of the 30th anniversary of the April Revolution, Katia Guerreiro is one of the 30 personalities distinguished among those who have distinguished themselves in the most diverse activities in these first decades of Portuguese democracy. In October of the same year, Katia Guerreiro launches in the market its third CD ALL OR NOTHING, with poems of Vinicius de Moraes, Sophia de Mello Breyner and António Lobo Antunes, among others. It also counts on the presence of pianist Bernardo Sassetti, who accompanies her in the track "My Lady of Sorrows". Also in the course of this year, Katia receives an invitation to open a new Concert Hall in Bern, Switzerland, as well as a show at the Opera de Lyon in France. He also participated, at the invitation of the Minister of Culture and Communication of France, Mr. Donedieu de Vabres, at the RENCONTRES POUR L'EUROPE DE LA CULTURE, held at the Comédie Française in Paris, along with great names in European and world culture, such as Tereza Berganza, Jeanne Moreau, Costa Gavras and Barbara Hendricks. Katia finishes her speech - which includes a speech in her own language - with an applauded fado sung "a capella", as an illustration of this musical genre. His eloquent defense of the cultural identity of each member state of the European Union is worth his appointment the following year as Member of the European Parliament for Culture. At the invitation of the Director of the Cultural Center Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation of Paris, Katia presents at this institution a Conference / Concert called O FADO (the first event of this kind for this type of music), with the musicologist and Professor of the University of Évora, Ruy Vieira Nery. As a corollary to the excellence of her work, in February 2006 she received the FEMALE PERSONALITY 2005 prize, which was played by the most important names in the Portuguese music scene, being considered "one of the most beautiful voices of the day, combined with an unusual vocal ability". In October of 2008 a new album of originals of FADO name is released, with its musicians of always and the usual rigor in the criterion of choice of the letters. In December 2009, he edited THE FADOS FADO, an album in which he recreates some of the most celebrated fados in the repertoires of Tony de Matos, Max, Tristão da Silva, Hermínia Silva, Teresa Silva Carvalho, João Ferreira-Rosa and, of course, Amália Rodrigues . Since 2005 he has collaborated with various symphony orchestras and in 2010 he toured 10 French cities with L'Ensemble Basse-Normandie, not being indifferent to her talent and her success in France, invites her to a project together. In May 2010 - the year she celebrates her 10 years of artistic career - Katia receives the "Best Performer" award from the Amália Rodrigues Foundation, which awards the Amália Awards annually. After an intense year of concerts all over the world, including a tour of 10 Norwegian cities, the 10th anniversary celebrations culminate in two grandiose shows: in Lisbon, at the Coliseu dos Recreios, and in Paris, at the Alhambra, and with the double album edition, 10 YEARS OF THE WINGS OF FADO, where it brings together the best moments of his discography and includes original duets with several artists. In the following years, Katia Guerreiro continues to see her talent recognized abroad, being invited to represent Portugal at important music festivals such as "Arts Alive" in South Africa, "Voix de Femmes" in Morocco, "International Festival of Dance and Music of Banquecoque" in Thailand, among others. In January 2012, he steps for the first time on the stage of the legendary Olympia in Paris, with an exhausted room. A show that gave birth to her first live CD / DVD "Katia Live at the Olympia", released in 2013. In December 2013, Katia Guerreiro is the Portuguese artist invited to perform on the 50th Anniversary of Europa Nostra at the Palais-de -Beaux-Arts in Brussels, being applauded standing by the teacher Plácido Domingo. Later this month, she is awarded the French Government, with the Order of Arts and Letters, in the Chevalier Degree, who recognized her as one of the most notable representatives of Portuguese culture around the world and one of the most brilliant singers of her generation. In November of 2014, his new album of originals was published, titled "Hasta ao Fim", which counted on the musical production of Tiago Bettencourt. In January 2015, she was awarded the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, with the Commendation of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator, for her invaluable contribution to the dissemination of Portuguese culture and its projection of Portugal around the world. In October of the same year, she was nominated for the prestigious "Lunas del Auditorio" prize (Mexico) which awards the best shows in Mexico for a year. His concert in Mexico City in October 2014 was considered a top 5 donation in the Traditional Music Category. In December of 2015 he performs at the closing concert of the Festival Sefarad de Montréal in Canada. The show "Trilogia Andaluza" brought together Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui, flamenco singer Marcos Marin and Ensemble Okto-Echo, directed by Katia Makdissi-Warren, also artistic director of the festival. On 30 January 2016, she gave a memorable concert at the Grande Salle de L'Opera in Lyon and became the first Portuguese artist to sing on that stage. The Tour 2016, which begins and ends in France, also includes Norway, Brazil, Spain and Portugal, where, as ambassador of the Festival "We love our gastronomy with Coca-Cola", it operates in several cities of the country. 2016 marked also the debut of the artist in the cinema. Katia Guerreiro was part of the cast of "Alfama em Si", directed by Diogo Varela Silva, nephew of Amália Rodrigues and with the musical direction of José Mário Branco. In March 2017, Katia Guerreiro is invited to perform at the Al Bustan Festival in Beirut. In 2017, the prestigious Lebanese festival had the theme "Queens and Empresses of the East". Later this year, Katia realized the dream of sharing the stage with one of the artists she admires most, Maestro Plácido Domingo. The common desire to sing together became a reality this May in a memorable show at MEO Arena in Lisbon. His concert at the Luxembourg Cathedral in June of this year was considered "a unique and historic moment for Portuguese culture and multiculturalism in Luxembourg." In August she was invited to sing at the International Theater Festival of Merida, in the spectacular Roman Theater where he shared the stage with Archangel and New Bulgarian Voices. The next album is already being prepared and is scheduled for release in the spring of 2018.
