Ned Sherrin has worked in radio, television, film and theatre. With Caryl Brahms he wrote many novels and plays including I GOTTA A SHOE, BEECHAM, LIBERTY RANCH, SING A RUDE SONG, NICKLEBY AND ME and THE MITFORD GIRLS.Since her death he has published his autobiography, their collection of essays on famous lyric writers SONG BY SONG and edited her memoirs. Other publications include two collections of ANECDOTES, one of essays, LOOSE NEDS, and the OXFORD DICTIONARY OF HUMOROUS QUOTATIONS which he edited. His diary SHERRIN'S YEAR and novel SCRATCH AN ACTOR were published in the Autumn of 1996.He received an Olivier Award for directing THE RATEPAYER'S IOLANTHE which, like THE METROPOLITAN MIKADO, he adapted with Alistair Beaton, with whom he also scripted ZIEGFELD. He has directed six plays by Keith Waterhouse, MR & MRS NOBODY with Judi Dench and Michael Williams; JEFFREY BERNARD IS UNWELL with Peter O'Toole and later Tom Conti, James Bolam and Dennis Waterman, BOOK ENDS with Michael Hordern and Dinsdale Landen, OUR SONG with Peter O'Toole and Tara Fitzgerald, GOOD GRIEF with Penelope Keith and more recently BING BONG with Dennis Waterman and Patrick Mower. He also directed Geraldine Aron's SAME OLD MOON at the Nuffield Theatre, Southampton, Victor Spinetti's one man show and the London run and national tour of Kay Mellor's A PASSIONATE WOMAN starring Stephanie Cole and the national tour with Gwen Taylor. His 40th Anniversary production of Dorothy Reynolds and Julian Slade's SALAD DAYS has successfully toured Britain and played in the West End. A more recent success is A SAINT SHE AIN'T by Dick Vosburgh and Denis King, which he directed at The King's Head Theatre, Islington prior to a West End run.His Saturday morning programme LOOSE ENDS is entering its 17th season on Radio Four. In television he is principally associated with TW3; in films with THE VIRGIN SOLDIERS and the Frankie Howerd series; and in the theatre with SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM, which he directed and in which he appeared in the West End and on Broadway, where he received a Tony Award nomination.
