Skagen Festival was started as an out-and-out oldtime traditional folk festival in 1971. In the early days the festival was held in the modest but very traditional surroundings of the beautiful 'Tuxen Villa' but it grew rapidly and moved to a larger venues around Skagen town and habour. The first few years the emphasis was on traditional Scandinavian folksingers, only occasionally featuring a few English and American artists. Greadually though Skagen Festivals musical profile changed as the music itselfs developed, and one by one, as well as the traditional Nordic folk music, modern folk, roots and rock became a natural part of Skagen Festivals musical profile. Today Skagen Festival is a folk festival encompassing all the wierd and wonderfull variations of the genre.
'The last weekend in June' is as always the weekend when thousands of people head for Denmarks most northerly town. The foreign audience comes from contries all over the world, but with a clear predominance of Norwegians and Swedes, and a not insignifigant proportion of Brits. The Festiwals core audience has for a long time been aged between about 25 and 60, but over the last few years a significant number of younger people have made their way to Skagen Festival as more and more young bands have started making apperances on the Folk Stage.
Skagen Festival has five stages and two festival camping areas, which are all situated in the town centre and yachting mariners athospheric and picturesque surroundings. Alle the festival facilities are within walking distance and contribute to Skagen Festivals reputation as a festival where an intimate athosphere, world class folk music, beautiful surrondings and quality are the order of the day.
Period: Last weekend of July.
