ILMC 16
by Allan McGowan

Due to a severe attack of gremlins in the up-dated and now corrected ILMC e-news distribution system many of you will have received the following information more times than you needed or cared to! – However for those of you not on that ILMC listing the following is information worth having!

The dates for next year’s 16th International Live Music Conference (ILMC) were announced on Friday November 21, as with the previous 15 editions the ILMC will be themed, this year Martin Hopewell and his Olympian organisers advise us to, ‘Get Set For The Games’, the Press Release reads:

In 2004 the eyes of the whole world will be focussed on one place as the most gifted and brightest stars from every country on the planet are called upon to assemble at the home of an ancient civilisation to represent their nation, demonstrate their skills and test their prowess in a spirit of harmony and friendly competition. Records will be broken, awards bestowed, and copious amounts of prohibited substances consumed by some of the least athletic men and women ever to draw breath...

Yes, you guessed it, it’s ILMC time again. The live music industry’s own ‘Polemic Games’ (NB: polemic [noun] - a controversial argument of opinions and ideas) are set to run from the grand opening ceremony on March 12 until the flame of the 16th ‘ILMC-iad’ finally flickers out on Sunday, March 14. London’s luxurious Royal Garden Hotel will once again serve as the grand arena and delegates' village for hundreds of competitors from every track and field of the live music industry who have qualified to take part in the three days of mental gymnastics and marathon social agenda.

In the meantime the ILMC team will continue making truly Olympian efforts to ensure that our 16th meeting achieves a new ‘personal best’ and lives up to it’s own, newly acquired Polemic motto: ‘Sonorius, sumptuosius, debilitius’ (roughly translated for those without the benefit of a classical education: noisier, more extravagant, and more knackering...).

Acting on reaction from previous years we have restructured the panel schedule for 2004. Panels will be in smaller, bite sized chunks with a schedule that offers more content yet is structured so as not to conflict important topics.

The ILMC 2004 social diary will have a pace that only a professional athlete could keep up with. Think go – karting, football, golf, a jazz café (with very special guest stars), a delegates jam session, an Australian party and of course The Feast Of Champions; the ILMC Gala Dinner (along with of course the inimitable Arthur Awards) – we have the ILMC’s veritable delegates decathalon!

So forget what’s happening in Greece, Portugal, or anywhere else - there’s only one global event next year worth remembering. Make a note in your diary now and get into training for the big event of 2004 - ILMC XVI. It’s the only games in town...
