Editor's noteTwo things on my mind this week, apart from winning the lottery and bringing about world peace, are jazz and women. Now there are people that will tell you that one of these items is always on my mind, so what's new? - But in this case my pondering is upon the much greater proportion of the popular music scenario taken up of late by both this musical genre and singers, musicians and songwriters of the female persuasion.
Maybe it has always been the way, but there definitely seem to be more and more successful women on stage, in the news, and on the charts all over the world. As an example as reported here the nominations for APRA Awards in Australia, still perceived by many as a somewhat macho country are definitely dominated by female artists and writers. However the percentage of successful female artists, seems to be a lot higher than the proportion of women to men in the business, maybe this is set to change as well.
My mind was focussed on jazz in New York recently when I was privileged to be given a guided tour of the still under construction three venue building which will house Jazz at the Lincoln Centre by Wynton Marsalis, a great gentleman.. There is no denying the current boom in jazz and artists who are fully committed to the genre, or at the least influenced by it, and who are taking the music to new audiences. Jamie Cullum's performances at ILMC 16 and SXSW were as appreciated and talked about by live music practitioners as any of his ticket buying audience. In this edition of the News we look at a small part of what is happening in the growing jazz, or as some will have it 'nu-jazz' world.
We do, of course, also look at all areas of our active live music industry, and as usual invite your comments on anything mentioned here and anything that you would like to bring to the attention of our readers.
All the best
Allan McGowan
