Allan McGowanEditor's note

Well, being back in the UK, although better for the sleep patterns once SXSW/NY jet lag had worn off, does not give any better view of the continuing times of turmoil for the music industry in the rest of the world, but here some things seem to be going reasonably well. New IFPI figures for 2003 show that the UK maintains its position as the third-biggest music market, growing its share to account for 10% of the world market, but the value of global music sales fell by 7.6% to $32bn last year. Audio sales fell by 9.9% in value, and the only real growth area is music video, which grew by 46.6%. In the US, sales of music videos and concerts on DVD doubled last year, with 18.7 million sold, vs. 9.1 million in 2002.

The people most affected by this still volatile state of affairs are all those losing their jobs, EMI are in the process of off loading another 1500 staff and BMG and Warners are still 'letting people go' as the euphemism for sacking is expressed. Where will these people go? Their skills in the main are peculiar to this industry, will we see more and more small independent music industry traders arise from this or will re-training be the order of the day? - Whatever we wish them all good luck.

If ClearChannel plans for the rest of the year in the UK alone are anything to go by then at least the live area is still looking in good shape, particularly for old school and established acts, a recent press release lists a staggering amount of upcoming dates, including the Download Festivals and tours with Brian Wilson, David Cassidy, a triple package of Deep Purple, Peter Frampton and Thunder, Duran Duran, Motorhead, Moody Blues, Chris Rea, Sting, Westlife and even Cliff Richard and Donnie Osmond!

My jet lag is being replaced with a decided impression of time-warp! On with today's - or is it yesterday's? - or maybe the future's? - News!

All the best
