Editor's noteWell, who would have thought that in these 'over exposed as the norm' days, a less than three-second flash of female flesh would have triggered the sort of moral outrage that initiates a tidal wave of puritanism, but Janet's Super Bowl exposure has done just that! Moral outrage has been expressed in the US Congress and by upstanding citizens, the Federal Communications Commission and right-wing radio commentators are demanding stricter decency standards. As we report, Viacom, Clear Channel, MTV and others have been impelled to respond to this.
Now don't get us wrong, here at Vip we are all for people doing right by their fellow man, and we think that the music industry as a major communicator has to exercise responsibility and to use its vast influence for good wherever and whenever possible. But surely the best way to exercise this is in similar manner to the initiatives of the Roskilde Festival reported in this News, not by over reacting to publicity stunts given global exposure by media displaying and re-running the very images that they pretend to be outraged by. Hopefully by now we're a grown up business, let's keep a sense of proportion here, before over the top censorship takes the sort of hold that has caused as much, if not more, damage to society in the past, than the excesses it professes to curb.
On the subject of good things, attendance figures for ILMC 16, which takes place in just under two weeks, are up, and include the participation of live music industry representatives from territories new to the Conference, such as Ghana. In terms of the health of the industry and of music as a communicator between people and cultures this can only be a good thing, and the Developing Markets, and Crossing Borders panels should yield interesting results, of which we shall of course keep you informed.
All the best
Allan McGowan
