From our humble beginnings as a local get-together in 1975, we have developed into a much more international event. These days our folk festival rangs as one of the largest, most important in Europe and we are internationally acclaimed for the quality and range of talent performing in Tønder every year. The festivals musical theme covers a broad spectrum of folk music and related styles. Musicans come from Scandinavia, most from Europe, USA, Canada and i occasion other parts of the world and play music ranging from the most traditional forms to areas closer to rock.

Two marquess at the festival site host the main stages during the festival. The seven other venues are located throughout the towm. The smallest venue has room for 180 guests, the larges hosts 2200. Tickets are sold to each individual concert.

The camping aera of the festival site has room for 3000 units and is reserved exclusively for festival quests.

At the festival site, there is never a need to go hungry or thirsty. Ample opportunity exists to satisfy a wide variety of culinary tastes in: The Fiddlers Green Restaurant, The Vinotek, The Irish Pub and at many different food and drink stalls and tents all around the fesival site.

There are two musical venues that are free of charge: The Jamtelt (Jam tent) and Klubscenen (The Club Scene). There is also an exhibition of musical instruments and a temporary shop set up for Millstream Records, Scandinavians largest specialist supplier og folk music on CD and DVD.

Our guests are 85% danish, the rest from all over the world! The age range is from 15 upwards, the majority beeing between 25-50 years of age.

Tønder Festival is put on by Tøner Festival Fond, which has three full time employees and 1900 volunteer helpers.
